Halo 2 Anniversary Full Campaign Walkthrough
by Team Respawn
Andy and Gus play through Halo 2 Anniversary on Heroic difficulty in co-op, covering the full MCC campaign. Both consider it the best Halo campaign, praising the anniversary graphics as a significant improvement over the originals.
General Observations
- Difficulty note: Co-op Legendary is significantly harder than solo because if either player dies, both reset. Heroic is described as "almost too easy" but far more playable.
- Anniversary graphics: Consistently praised throughout. Anniversary wins on almost every map, especially in the city sections and High Charity.
- Controls: MCC uses legacy/recon control schemes; swapping between MCC and Infinite can cause muscle memory issues.
Mission 1 – Cairo Station
- Invisible Elites appear early — watch for them before pushing through rooms.
- Gunnery Sergeant Johnson appears early and is considered objectively well-written in this game, with all his best lines concentrated here.
- Jackal snipers are noted as among the most dangerous enemies in Halo history — use caution in open corridors.
- The Halo 2 BR is cited as the best BR in the series.
- Lore note: This mission establishes the fall of Earth and sets up the Covenant invasion as a consequence of the Prophet of Regret acting without the other Prophets' permission.
Mission 2 – Outskirts / Metropolis
- Urban guerrilla warfare section — one of the few times the series shows close-quarters city combat.
- Warthog section: The turret gun has no overheating — sustained fire is viable.
- Boarding the Scarab: Time the jump from the elevated platform when the Scarab passes below — rockets nearby help clear the deck.
- Achievement: "Six Pedals, Four Directions" — drive or ride the Spectre (Covenant Warthog equivalent).
Mission 3 – The Arbiter (Heretic Gas Mine)
- First Arbiter mission. The Arbiter's invisibility replaces the flashlight Chief carries — same button.
- The heretics are the only Covenant faction that exposes the truth about the Halo rings. They are entirely wiped out by the end of the mission.
- Anniversary graphics: The Arbiter's armor and hand detail look noticeably better in the remastered mode.
Mission 4 – Delta Halo
Outdoor Forerunner installation — considered one of the best-designed missions in the campaign.
- Features a ferry/gondola section that slowly moves players through a scenic canyon.
- Vehicles: Ghost and Wraith combat is prominent. The Wraith can be hijacked with a melee approach. Ghost explosions in Halo 2 are uniquely dramatic.
- Hunters appear toward the end — the classic strategy of face-hugging them while sidestepping is effective on Heroic.
Mission 5 – Regret (Prophet Boss Fight)
- The Prophet of Regret sits on a shielded floating throne; standard weapons deflect off the shield.
- Boss mechanic: Wait for Johnson to shoot the shield, then close in with melee attacks or board the throne directly. Melee is required.
- Honor Guard Elites (purple-armored) protect Regret — avoid trading sword hits directly with them.
Mission 6 – Sacred Icon / Flood Levels
- Heavy Flood presence.
- Plasma and energy weapons are more effective against Flood than human weapons.
- The Energy Sword one-hits most Flood combat forms.
- Flood note: The large Flood tank forms (Juggernaut-type) only appear in Halo 2 and possibly Halo 3; they vanish from later games without explanation.
- Forerunner Sentinels will engage both the player and the Flood simultaneously — letting them fight each other is viable.
Mission 7 – Quarantine Zone / High Charity
- The Flood have infected High Charity; the environment shifts dramatically.
- Cortana Toy Easter Egg: A collectible Rampant Cortana doll is hidden in the High Charity level — achievement unlocks on collection. Considered a subtle story spoiler hinting at Cortana's eventual rampancy.
- Infected UNSC Scorpion tanks appear — these are driveable if you can get to them.
Mission 8 – The Great Journey (Final Mission)
- Johnson hijacks a Scarab and uses it to take down Tartarus's energy shield during the final sequence.
- Boss mechanic (Tartarus): His shield must be shot down by Johnson's Scarab before melee attacks register. Use a Fuel Rod or Energy Sword once the shield drops.
- Friendly Hunters join the player as allied units in this mission.
- Lore note: The split within the Covenant becomes permanent here; the Elites formally break from the Prophets, setting up Halo 3.
Overall Notes
- Scarab design: The Halo 2 Scarab is considered the definitive design. The 343-era FPS games contain no Scarabs, which both hosts find strange.
- Brute Shot: Introduced in Halo 2, it never returns in any 343-era game — even Halo Infinite, which centers on a Brute faction. Widely noted as a missed opportunity.
- Vehicle combat: Halo 2's vehicle combat is considered peak for the series. Ghosts, Wraiths, and the Scorpion all feel weighty and satisfying.
- Graphics toggle tip: Several environmental details differ between classic and anniversary modes. The anniversary mode is generally more accurate to the intended visual design.
