Sergeant Johnson Halo Wars 2 Guide — Bunkers, Mechs & Digging in Deep

by Team Respawn· ~6 min read

Sergeant Johnson is one of the more creative leader designs in Halo Wars 2 — a fan-favorite Halo character with no Halo Wars pedigree, built around bunkers, siphoning turrets and a slow but devastating mech ball. This beginner's guide is aimed at players who are new to Johnson and want to understand his tools, not at the competitive crowd. Pair it with our UNSC faction guide, the 2026 leader tier list, and the UNSC leader powers ranking.

Pros

The Bunker Is Great Early, and Great With Allies

  • Strong defense for the infantry Johnson produces, and it no longer costs population — if you have the resources, just let it fly
  • Works even better alongside allied heroes: put Pavium in a bunker and his drone heals the bunker, so you get defense for Pavium and a longer-lasting bunker
  • A Hunter Captain with Skitterers attached in a bunker still has the Skitterers firing from outside
  • Falls off as the game progresses — by mid-to-late game it is more of a distraction or a line-of-sight tool than a real defensive answer

Digging In Is a Strong Defensive Power

  • Gives siphon to standard turrets — doesn't sound exciting, but it's great if you're getting spammed in the early-to-mid game
  • Reduces the cost and cooldown of the bunker and Siege Turret drops, so you can use the bunker much more often

A Decent Healing Y Ability

Johnson's Y ability drops a small healing area — but only where there are no other units nearby, otherwise he won't do it. It doesn't heal as fast as Yap Yap's Grunt Goblins, but it's a nice tool to have mid-engagement to top off your army.

His Mechs Are Fantastic

  • The Colossus is one of the strongest Tech 3 vehicles in the entire game
  • Late-game Johnson's economy is extremely strong — Digging in Deep lets you build production buildings for free (generators included), the only cost that remains is turrets

Cons

A Weak Hero Unit

Johnson doesn't hold up in raw damage compared to heroes like Atriox's Chosen, the Hunter Captain, or even Decimus and Voridus. What he excels at is being a good support hero — you're not troll-raiding your opponent's base with Johnson alone the way you might with a Shipmaster Honor Guard, but his Y ability supports your army well. He's not so weak you shouldn't build him, but he's far from the strongest hero unit.

One-Dimensional Mechs

  • If you're playing against a Johnson, it's a given what they're building — mechs. He doesn't have as many unique units as other leaders
  • The Colossus is slow, which is a real liability on big maps against faster units like Warthogs or against air — Pelican Transport becomes a requirement, not an option
  • Not much strategic variety beyond the mech ball; he's stronger in team games than 1v1

Early Game Build Order

First Leader Point: Digging In (skip Restoration Drones)

Digging In adds health and siphoning to standard turrets and reduces the cost and cooldown of the bunker and Siege Turret drop. It's the stronger opener — you can always come back for the heals later.

Opening Buildings

  1. Send Marines to collect supply and power crates — split them between both instead of sending everyone to one side
  2. Two, or even three, Supply Pads
  3. Upgrade the first Supply Pad as soon as it finishes
  4. Generator on a remaining pad

From here you have options: a second Generator to reach Tech 2 faster, or a mini base with a Barracks for a bunker-trolling play. Bunker trolling makes more sense on smaller maps and in team games — on a large map, prioritize the faster Tech 2 route instead.

Claim a Mini and Push to Tech 2

  • Build a second Marine squad to help hold power nodes while your second Generator finishes
  • Once you have enough power, tech up to Tech 2
  • Build a couple of turrets for defense
  • Build an Armory on the mini's last pad to get Johnson going

Second Leader Point: Map-Dependent

On a small map (think Mirage), take the Bunker Drop. On a large map, take Pelican Transport instead — if your opponent goes air, slow Colossus mechs can get overwhelmed before you're able to respond, and Pelican Transport keeps you mobile.

Tech 2: Mantises and the EMP Mac Blast

  • Build two Garages and start double-pumping Mantises — they only cost supplies, so they're easy to mass while you save power for other things
  • Get Johnson's Smart Missile upgrade
  • Grab the Michelin Shield requisition and the vehicle upgrade for your Mantises before pushing further
  • Build a second base (expo) as soon as you can afford it — it's critical, and an aggressive Johnson-plus-Mantis-army push into an unready opponent's base can outright win the game
  • Sprinkle in a couple of Nightingales for sustain

Third Leader Point: EMP Mac Blast

A lot of players forget that EMP Mac Blast doesn't just damage and stun enemy vehicles — it also boosts the damage of your own friendly air and vehicles. Ideally you drop it so it catches both your opponent's units and your own at the same time.

The Pelican Cheese

Unlike Halo Wars 1, Pelican Transport in Halo Wars 2 doesn't require line of sight to drop units — you can drop your army anywhere the Pelicans can physically land, even blind. That opens up dropping units directly in front of an opponent's base from across the map if you want to close the distance fast.

Fourth Leader Point: Mech Overcharge (mandatory)

Mech Overcharge makes all of your mechs temporarily invincible and gives them a speed boost. It's effectively an unbreakable for the Mantis and Colossus. Your slow mechs are vulnerable to glassing beams, Infernos, Cryobombs and Seismic — the kind of leader powers that can wipe a mech ball outright — so save Mech Overcharge for the moment you're about to lose your mechs fast. Used well, it can save an entire match.

Tech 3: The Colossus Ball

  • Start building Colossus mechs — the Stomp ability is great, but keep in mind they're expensive and cost 9 population each
  • Grab the Goss Designator to improve your Mantises further, then the Goss Chaingun upgrade for Johnson
  • The Colossus is really, really good — slow, but rated above Scorpions, Grizzlies and Wraiths, and arguably the best Tech 3 vehicle in the whole game
  • Expect your opponent to answer it with air — build Wolverines and keep your vehicle upgrades current
  • Don't sleep on Combat Tech Marines: only $150 each, their rockets are genuinely good against air, and the Combat Tech upgrade lets them heal vehicles — including your Colossus and Mantis — from outside the unit

Fifth Leader Point: Digging in Deep (Combat Salvage if you're feeling bold)

Digging in Deep lets you build all base buildings for free — generators included (barricades don't matter outside Firefight). Generator costs scale steeply (200, then 500, then 800 supplies, then 1,100 for a fourth), so unlocking this before your economy needs to scale further can save well over a thousand supplies immediately.

Remaining Leader Points

  • Restoration Drones, Combat Salvage, or the Pelican Transport upgrade (lets it teleport further, and it's free) are all reasonable next picks
  • Siege Turret Drop is solid if you want more static defense
  • EMP Mac Blast 2 is also good and worth prioritizing over Remote Sensors
  • Remote Sensors (extra line of sight for buildings and capture points) is the weakest power on the wheel — fill out everything else first and take it last

Don't skip Pelican Transport even if you took the Bunker Drop on a small map — your mechs are slow enough that you'll want it regardless, and even the big Colossus surprisingly fits inside a Pelican.

Key Takeaways

  1. Digging In first over Restoration Drones — siphon turrets and cheaper, faster bunker and turret drops
  2. Bunker Drop on small maps, Pelican Transport on large ones — Johnson's mechs are too slow to skip mobility
  3. Double Garage into Mantises at Tech 2, second base as soon as you can afford it
  4. EMP Mac Blast hits both armies — try to catch your own units in it too
  5. Mech Overcharge is mandatory at the fourth point — save it to bail out a mech ball about to die to a nuke
  6. The Colossus is one of the best Tech 3 vehicles in the game, but expect air in response — build Wolverines and Combat Tech Marines
  7. Digging in Deep at the fifth point turns your economy free outside of turrets
  8. Remote Sensors is the worst power on the wheel — take it dead last
  9. Johnson is a support hero, not a solo threat, and shines more in team games than 1v1
